One year ago, my good (DJ) friend The Gaff and I released a mix that we had been working on for a long time. What started as a few simple ideas mixed together turned into a concept project that took 2 years to finish. “Soul Sisters, Stand Up!” is a mix based 100% on female soul music. We combed our collections and put together 80 minutes of music in mixes, remixes, routines and interludes and this is what we came up with.Featured on some of your favorite websites like egotripland, The Smoking Section, Exclaim!, and garnering a hilarioius review from The Austin Chronicle, it was well received, and that’s about as much as you can ask for.
Beyond the release show in Toronto, we haven’t performed ‘in this style’ live. I mean, you can pretty much count on some heavy soulful presence at any Bastid or Gaff show, but our touring schedules last year kept us from doing the 4 turntable set elsewhere (beyond a brief section of the Funk Jam at Shambhala Music Festival). This summer, thanks to some help from some of our LA DJ fam, we are changing that!
Friday, August 16th, alongside Rhettmatic of the World Famous Beat Junkies (!), DJ Expo (of Heavyweight Carry On fame) and host Azul, we will be throwing a party at NOLA’s in Los Angeles to mark the one year anniversary of “Soul Sisters, Stand Up!”. Gaff and I will be rocking a set live on 4 turntables that will feature pieces of the mix, along with some new and alternative live routines in the SSSU style. We can’t wait for this show.
Spread the word to anyone you know on the west coast, and reach if you’re nearby! It will look and sound something like this:
Shouts out to Rhek for the flyer, and of course the original cover. A bad, bad man.
