I’m proud to announce (and be a part of) a great event in support of hip-hop’s creator DJ Kool Herc. Toronto’s strong hip-hop community has come together to put on a DJ show to collect donations for his support. Herc was recently hospitalized and is subject to high medical bills. There’s some more info about it over at DJ Premier Blog.
For this gig, all DJs will be taking it back to the source and playing ALL VINYL SETS! As this was the way it started, we only see it fit to honor the man in this way. Going to be a great night. Let’s come together and make an impact.
Be there: February 10th @ Wrongbar, 1279 Queen Street West, Toronto. 9pm-2am. Facebook event right here. Read on for a press release…

On his Sirius XM radio show this past week, DJ Premier shared that DJ Kool Herc was sick in hospital, suffering from an undisclosed ailment, unable to afford proper health care treatment. “[He] who we call the father of hip hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well,” said Premier. “Since he’s very sick and has no insurance… [he] needs to pay his bill so he can get out of the hospital.”
A native of Kingston Jamaica, DJ Kool Herc (born Clive Campbell) is widely credited with founding hip hop in the Bronx, NY. Initially throwing parties in the rec room of his family’s home at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. Herc’s popularity quickly grew, leading him to later land a regular gig DJing at Hevalo in the Bronx. An influence on prolific artists such as Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, Herc was instrumental in developing key DJ techniques and encouraging the growing breakdance culture of the 80s. It was Herc himself who invented breakbeat DJing, rapping on the mic to his accompanying b-boys and b-girls, while mixing up various styles of music. What Herc was creating in the process would later come to form the basis of hip hop.
“We spoke today, and he needs some help to pay his bills for the hospital because he can’t hold it down,” Premier added. “And being that he is the man who set this whole culture off, ya’ll should be wanting to do it any type of way that you can.” While Kool Herc was released from hospital on Sunday, HYPERLINK “http://twitter.com/” \l “%21/chuckcreekmur/status/31821186904100864″ \t “_blank” according to DJ Tony Touch, he is “still in dire need of financial aid”.
The show will feature DJs Skratch Bastid, Paul E Lopes, Starting from Scratch, Son of S.O.U.L, Kaewonder, Musiklee Inzane, Fase and L’oqenz, spinning strictly vinyl, with hosts Arcee and Fatski. Join us as Toronto’s premiere DJ talent comes together to support the father of hip hop.
