Last Thursday marked the first day of a big slew of dates I have as a headliner for the Canadian Red Bull 3-Style DJ event. From now until the country’s final on March 13th in Toronto, I’ll be traveling to 10 major cities across Canada, judging the competition and performing a set of seasoned skills for all of the party people.
Thre3Style is a DJ competition, but with an even focus on the club/mixing aspect of the game as well as the technical side. It’s still ‘survival of the fittest’, but the ‘fittest’ may be more fit in different techniques than those that were featured in the DJ competitions I cut my teeth in. As the name suggests, it’s about combining many styles into one cohesive set, all while doing it with finesse and making it clear that you run this town tonight. DJ Flipout did that best on Thursday night in Vancouver and took home the big cheque. You can cheque out some footage from that set below, but first…
To help break the rules/judging criteria down for the competitors and fans, I filmed some short ‘episodes’ with Curtis Santiago (the host for the Canadian dates) where we discuss & demonstrate what it’s going to take to win.
Read on for 2 more and images/clips from DJ Flipout’s winning set…
The winner of the Canadian finals will be competing against the champs from 12 other nations in Paris at the WORLD FINALS this December. Pretty great stuff.
Check if I’ll be in your city on tour over in my dates section.

How did you ever come up with that Flashlight / Brick in the Wall routine?! Sh*t is genius. Heard you might be blessing us at the US Open again in a couple weeks. Stoked beyond belief. LG and I agreed they weren’t ready last year…Round 2!!!
I always thought that Flashlight would be a good song to juggle because it has so many cool (and sampled) parts with weird sounds. Playing around with the intro, I just heard those notes and re-arranged them. Coincidentally I had found the Another Brick in The Wall 45 earlier that week in some trash pile and I duct taped it to the inside of the record so that I could flip to it easier and it worked.
US open looking good! I can return your snowboard pants! ha.
