Tonight I get to open for the excellent MC Gary Grice a/k/a The Genius a/k/a The GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.

I was/still am a die-hard Wu-fanatic (check my old school agendas for lyric transcriptions) and I’m very excited to see what the god will perform. I like most of his catalog; obviously Liquid Swords is his best album (if not one of the best albums in hip-hop history), but I like lots of songs off of his Cold Chillin’ debut Words From The Genius and his LS follow-up Beneath The Surface.

Click the link below for some viewing to get you in the mood (not THAT mood, pervert). I’m on from 10-10:45 tonight.

The classic…

Back when album cuts could become nightly staples:

GZA was big on the ‘theme’ raps (Labels, Fame, Publicity), Labels is probably his greatest, but I have a soft spot for this one, too:

This Jesse West-produced attempt at an early 90s club song is kinda shameful, though. Something tells me he’s not going to perform it tonight…

Some pre-Wu GZA & RZA, originally a B-side from the WFTG (no, that’s not an internet acronym) album.

….and with that, time to put this set together. Let’s get on this mission like Indiana Jones.
